Bad Habits for Your Feet

As podiatrists we see the effects of bad habits on patients feet all the time. Maybe it is a habit you picked up from family, or even friends. We’re here to tell you that some of these habits can cause major problems, and when it comes to your feet and ankles, prevention is often the best medicine.

No Socks With Shoes – This is very common, especially here in the south, because it’s easy and trendy. We understand that fashion plays a part of our lives, but when you go without socks while wearing shoes it can lead to some smelly results. Recent studies have shown that not wearing socks with close toed shoes can increase the amount of bacteria in your shoes by more than 200%. This means it’s easier for you to contract athlete’s foot, toenail fungus, infected blisters, or even just plain old smelly feet. Instead, choose no-show socks, especially ones made of wool or synthetic materials, as they wick moisture away from the foot. If you still have to go sockless in shoes, try applying a drying powder to your feet, and in the warmer months reapply it multiple times throughout your day.

Wearing The Wrong Shoes – You wouldn’t wear ballerina slippers to go hiking would you? Every shoe type is made for a different activity. Don’t wear unsupportive shoes, like flip flops or flats, when you have a lot of standing or walking to do. Wearing the right shoe for your activities will help to ensure that your feet and ankles stay healthy and pain free all day long.

High Heels – It’s true that high heels and high fashion go hand in hand, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make smart decisions when you’re in heels. Try to opt for heels with a lower height, or even wedges, as they provide more stability. Avoid pointy toed shoes, as these often cram toes into a tight and very uncomfortable position. If you do have to wear heels to a party try to remember the “rule of 2’s”, try to wear heels no higher than 2 inches, for not more than 2 hours, if you can.

Pushing Through The Pain – Pain is our body’s only way of informing us that something isn’t quite right. If your feet feel sore or tired, take a break. Sometimes just 5 -10 minutes of rest can be very helpful. Also, don’t ignore warning signs of of bigger problems. Any unexpected pain is an indicator that there may be a larger underlying problem. Visit your podiatrist for an examination, the sooner you do the sooner your doctor can get you back on your feet again, pain free.
