We’ve all been there, the end of a long day filled with walking and you’ve got a brand new blister to show for it. Whether you’ve been running a marathon or just a marathon of shopping at the mall we all know that painful feeling. This is why we’ve compiled a list of tips to help you prevent those blisters from appearing in the first place.
Shoes – This absolutely has to be the most valuable tip for preventing blisters. When shoes are too tight they cause excessive rubbing, which in turn causes blisters. So just get a shoe that fits loosely you say? Unfortunately this can cause blisters too, the foot moves too much and rubs the inside of the shoe again. So the solution is wear shoes that fit you. We recommend actually having you foot measured at a shoe store or your podiatrists office with a Brannock device. You may be surprised to learn you’ve been wearing the wrong size of shoe for a long time!
Socks – Socks definitely play a big roll in blister prevention. Try to find socks that wick moisture away from the foot, wool is a natural fabric that is great at this. Moisture build up in socks made of cotton causes socks to sick to the foot or bunch up in areas causing blisters to form. Also, try wearing two socks at once, this can cut down on friction significantly.
Orthotic Inserts – These supportive inserts can help support the foot causing less motion in the shoe, and less motion means less rubbing. Custom made inserts can actually be designed to address areas that frequently experience hot spots and blisters.
Lubricants – These over the counter products can be very helpful when you’re already dealing with a hot spot that has the potential to become a blister. You can go with a basic petroleum jelly or you can opt for specialty products designed specifically with blister prevention in mind. Check out your local running or sporting goods store for a wide selection to choose from.
Blister Bandages – This is another tip if you already think a blister is starting to form. While more expensive than regular bandages, blister bandages have stronger adhesive as well as additional padding and are designed to be used all day long.
Whatever you use to prevent blisters please remember, do not pop or puncture a blister, this can easily lead to infection. If you find you have a blister that is so large it is causing major discomfort then see a doctor to have the blister drained. The doctor has sterile instruments designed for this and can give you follow up instructions to prevent and chance of infection
