Pedicure No-No's

As podiatrist we see first hand the dangers of improper pedicures. Follow these simple steps whether getting pampered at the spa or taking care of your pedicure needs at home.

 

  1. Don’t mess with your cuticles. The cuticles act as a barrier against bacteria, so don’t push them back, they have an important job to do!

  2. Don’t round off the corners. While it may seem a bit more aesthetically pleasing, rounding off the corners of nails is a major factor we see in developing ingrown nails. Instead cut the nail straight across.

  3. Use clean, disinfected tools. No sharing tools, including emory boards which can harbour bacteria and even fungus. If you can’t be sure that the pedicure shop you like uses separate tools for every client, or disinfects the tools between clients, then bring your own tools. You can find good inexpensive nail tool kits at any beauty shop.

  4. Don’t shave before a pedicure. Shaving legs before a pedicure opens up tiny pores in your skin making you more prone to infection. So for your health's sake, stay fuzzy until the pedicure is over.

  5. Foot soak is a no no. The baths that most pedicure shops use to soak your feet in warm water are usually teeming with bacteria. Even if the shop changes the water between each client there is still water hidden in the jets, a warm, moist, dark place that is ideal for bacteria and fungus growth. It may feel nice, but not at the price of a fungal infection!

  6. Don’t hide your nail problems. We often see cases of toenail fungus that have gone hidden by nail polish, which only allows for the fungus to continue to grown unseen. Your podiatrist has several options, such as laser nail treatment, to help rid you of nail fungus instead of just hiding it away.

Following these simple steps can help your feet stay happy and healthy. If you find that you or a loved one is having frequent problems with ingrown nails or nail fungus, visit your local podiatrist and get help. Your feet will thank you for it.
