Tips for Winter Foot Care

With the colder months now upon us it’s time to make sure your feet aren’t going to feel the freeze. Follow these simple steps to make sure your feet don’t get left out in the cold this winter.


Use Thick Wool Socks - wool is a great natural material for not only keeping your feet nice and warm, but wool also wicks moisture away from the feet, which are more prone to athlete's foot and toenail fungus in winter months.


Keep Feet Clean and Dry - wearing thick socks and boots can cause the feet to sweat more than normal, which lead to fungal problems. Make sure to dry feet completely after showering and apply foot powder to keep foot sweat to a minimum.


Wear Good Boots - make sure your boots fit snugly, but not so tight that they cut off circulation to your toes, as this puts them at an increased chance of frostbite. Your heel, midfoot and ankle should all fit tightly, while your toes should still be able to wiggle freely. When purchasing boots for children avoid the temptation to purchase a size up in the hopes that they will grow into them. Loose fitting boots can lead to blisters and be unstable for walking and winter play.


Dry Out Boots Completely - In between wearings make sure your footwear drys out inside completely. This will help to prevent any potential fungus growth as well as making sure your feet stay warm and dry all day long.


Wash Feet/Clean Socks Daily - wash feet every day with warm water and soap, making sure to dry feet completely before putting on fresh new socks every day. Boots tend to trap moisture and excessive sweat build up can lead to toenail fungus and athlete's foot.


If you follow these simple steps you should have no problem keeping your feet happy, healthy and warm all winter long!
