Fall Prevention For Seniors

Doctors will tell you that most injuries they see in their patients over the age of 65 are caused by falls. Common knowledge says that exercise is one of the best way to reduce the risk of falls in seniors, knowledge which is now supported by research published by the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The studies looked at a variety of methods to reduce the occurrence of falls, including the following:

  • Exercise
  • Education on Fall Risks
  • Vitamin Supplements
  • Balance Training
  • Home Modifications
  • Vision Treatments

When looking at these methods research clearly shows that the most beneficial of these was exercise. The research shows that seniors who took part in exercise programs had an almost 50% decreased chance of suffering a fall.

While exercise may be the primary method to prevent falls the research shows that combining these methods produced even better results. Meaning a senior who exercises, takes vitamin supplements, and has undergone vision treatment and made home modifications reduced the risk of a harmful fall by almost 90%.

The podiatrists at Ankle & Foot Associates have found that in addition to the above methods, braces can greatly improve the balance of seniors. The Moore Balance Brace is what’s known as an AFO (Ankle Foot Orthosis) it it secured with velcro straps around the calf and is designed to fit inside the wearers shoe, providing excellent stability for both walking and standing. When combined with exercise the brace greatly reduces the likelihood of a dangerous fall.
