Foot & Ankle Injuries of an Active Life

It’s probably no surprise that active people are in general healthier than those who do not get enough exercise. Your doctor has said it time and again, get out there and do something, anything. Whether you like a nice stroll in the park, an adult softball league, running competitive 5k’s, cycling, or even just playing with your kids, exercise is important to a healthy lifestyle. But of course, with an active life comes an increased risk of injury, especially to the feet and ankles. Below you’ll find a list of the most common injuries we see from our most active patients on a regular basis.

Plantar Fasciitis – The plantar fascia is the thick band of tissue that runs under arch and connects the heel of the toes. It does a lot of work and when you’ve been more active than usual it’s not uncommon for it to become inflamed, causing pain. While stretching, ice, and NSAIDs (ex. aspirin, ibuprofen) will help control the pain and swelling for short term boughts (two weeks or less) long term plantar fasciitis can cause scarring around the fascia, causing more pain and limited mobility. Fortunately your local podiatrist is very skilled in treating plantar fasciitis, so the sooner you see them the easier recovery will be.

Ankle Sprains – A very common injury that often goes untreated by a medical professional. Most people will just do the smart thing and follow the RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) protocol, but if not the injury can become aggravated and much worse. If the sprain is accompanied with excessive redness, swelling and pain then head to the podiatrist right away. They should be able to take x-rays and ultrasounds to make sure that it is just a sprain and not a more serious injury like a break or tendon rupture.

Achilles Tendonitis – This is a common and very painful injury we see in active patients where the achilles tendon becomes inflamed, usually from overuse. The pain presents as a stiffness or tenderness above the heel on the back of the leg. Much like ankle sprains, at home care involves the RICE protocol and over the counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Conservative care methods include physical therapy and bracing. In rare instances surgery may be needed to repair damaged tissue.
