Studies tell us that 7 out of 10 people will deal with foot problems in their lifetime. It may not surprise you to hear that men often let foot and ankle pain go untreated, sometimes for years, with potentially dangerous consequences. We’ve compiled some problems that we tend to see more in our male population, not to say that women don’t suffer from these as well, so ladies pay attention as well.
Plantar Fasciitis – Often described as a pain in the heel or arch of the foot, plantar fasciitis is caused by an inflammation of the plantar fascia, the thick band of tissue that connects the heel bones to the toe bones. Often this is the result of extreme stain caused by lack of support of the arch. So that means it’s time for more supportive shoes, possibly with a custom orthotic insert.
Hyperhidrosis – It’s often that we see men with very sweaty feet. A common condition, especially in the warmer months of the year, it is often accompanied with a bad odor. A simple use of a drying powder on the feet, as well as changing out wet socks often can help combat this. In addition, men suffering from sweaty feet may want to wear socks with materials that are better at wicking moisture away from the foot, such as merino wool or a synthetic fabric. Cotton socks are not recommended for patients suffering from this condition, as they tend to hold moisture next to the skin, which can lead to our next problem.
Athlete’s Foot – A fungal infection of the foot, athlete’s foot is often caused by the buildup of bacteria in shoes. Also, it is common to pick up this itchy painful problem while sharing public showers or pool areas, so try to make sure you don’t go barefoot in these places. Instead invest in a pair of shower shoes or even flip flops, they can greatly reduce the likelihood of infection.
Ingrown Toenails – While a common problem for both men and women, podiatrists will tell you that they tend to see this problem more in their male populations, possibly because men try to “tough it out” more than women suffering from this painful problem. Ingrown nails dig into the skin at their edges and can even pierce the skin, leaving the body open to infection.
Gout – Often called the “king’s disease” because gout pain is associated with eating fatty foods and alcohol, aka living like a king. A form of arthritis, gout is a buildup of uric acid in the joints that can form crystals causing intense pain. Those suffering from gout symptoms can take an oral NSAID (such as aspirin or ibuprofen) to help ease the pain. Prevention is key when treating gout, so sufferers should stay away from red meats and alcohol. Also, proper hydration is important to help your body flush the uric acid, so drink plenty of water.
