Summer Foot & Ankle Injuries

Summer is the most active season for adults and children alike. It is also the most active season for foot and ankle injuries. From the beach to the mountains summertime is a time to be outside and having fun, and nothing stops that fun faster than a foot or ankle injury. We’ve put together a list of some of the top problems that your feet and ankles will be facing this summer.

  • Slip & Fall Injuries – Between the pool, the hiking trail, soccer field, baseball field, and the beach there’s plenty of opportunities for slips and falls. Frequent injuries like ankle sprains, stubbed toes, and tendon pulls/tears can leave you in pain if you don’t seek out proper medical attention ASAP. If you can’t get to a doctor right away try to use the R.I.C.E. (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) protocol, this will lessen pain and give your body the best chance to start healing until you can get to the care of a medical professional.

  • Insect Stings & Bites – When spending all this time outdoors make sure to be aware of what’s underfoot. When it comes to stings and bites from insects, prevention is definitely the best medicine. If you’re out hiking watch where your step, and no matter what, don’t go anywhere barefoot, it’s just asking for trouble.

  • Sunburns – This one has to be the most overlooked bit on foot and ankle care during the summer months. If the skin on your feet is going to be exposed all day make sure to apply sunscreen every 4 hours to avoid some serious burns. Opt for a sweat or water resistant brand and make sure it’s at least SPF 30.

  • Overuse Injuries – With beautiful weather comes more activities, which means more stress and work for your feet than they may be used to. So if you know you are going to be walking around an amusement park all day make sure to wear supportive sneakers, not flat unsupportive flip flops. Also, make sure to rest if your feet are feeling tired and achy, it’s your body telling you to slow it down, so don’t ignore that pain. There’s no medal waiting for those who “push through the pain”, just an injury that may linger with you for the rest of the summer.
