What to Expect During MLS Laser Therapy

We rely on our feet to get us from place to place and power us through our day. When your feet or ankles hurt, your whole world could come to a halt. If your pain becomes chronic, you might have to face the possibility of long-term medication use and even surgery. But MLS can change that.

Our expert podiatrists at Ankle & Foot Associates LLC believe in treating the source of your foot and ankle pain, not just the symptoms. At select locations throughout southeast Georgia and South Carolina, we offer the revolutionary multiwave locked system (MLS®) to safely, effectively, and dramatically reduce pain and stimulate healing.

An MLS treatment is noninvasive and drug-free. You may even get enough relief from MLS to say goodbye to surgery or pain medications forever. Here’s how.

MLS stimulates healing

The FDA-approved technology behind MLS therapy harnesses the power of intense light waves to penetrate your tissues. The energy triggers a chain reaction of events that promote healing. An MLS treatment stimulates your cells to renew and rebuild themselves, decreases inflammation, and reduces pain.

Although laser therapy is not new, MLS is very new. Unlike other versions of laser therapies, such as low-level laser therapy (LLLT) which can be ineffective, and high-power (HP) laser therapy, which can damage surrounding tissues, MLS offers all the benefits without the downside. MLS is noninvasive, painless, and has no side effects.

The MLS system combines two types of energy: one that’s constant and another that pulses. The two work in tandem to stimulate healing. Our podiatrists target the area for treatment and precisely control the depth of the laser energy to optimize its healing effect. Best of all, an MLS treatment only takes about eight minutes.

How MLS helps your feet and ankles

An MLS treatment is highly effective for any condition that involves inflammation, degeneration, or trauma. When it comes to your feet and ankles, that’s good news. It means that we can treat multiple conditions with MLS, including these five common foot ailments:

1. Arthritis pain

No matter what type of arthritis you have -— rheumatoid arthritis, gout, osteoarthritis, or post-traumatic arthritis -— painful and stiff feet can make it difficult to walk or get around. MLS can reduce swelling and increase your range of motion and mobility. In fact, MLS used in conjunction with other arthritis treatments, like physical therapy, is a winning combo.

2. Foot neuromas

Men and women with diabetes or who must spend a good portion of their day on their feet may develop neuromas. A neuroma is a thickening of the tissues that surround your nerves.

Most people with neuromas develop them on their heels or on the balls of their feet. The thickened tissue puts pressure on the nerve and gives you a burning painful sensation called neuropathy. MLS not only stops the pain, but it can also help heal the tissue that’s causing the pain.

3. Plantar fasciitis

A stabbing pain in your feet that occurs when you get out of bed in the morning is a sign that you have plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis develops when the long, tough band of tissue that stretches from your heel along the bottom of your foot to your toes becomes inflamed.

Quieting down the inflammation associated with plantar fasciitis isn’t easy, and typically requires a lot of rest. But with MLS, we have you moving around without pain in no time.

4. Tendonitis

Your tendons are another part of your foot’s anatomy that are prone to inflammation and pain. Overuse, wear-and-tear, and injury can all cause a great deal of tendon pain. MLS targets that inflammation and stops the discomfort so you can get moving again.

5. Sprains/strains

Sprains and strains are some of the most common foot and ankle injuries. Whether you stepped off a curb wrong, tripped on a cord, or injured yourself playing sports, your muscles, tendons, and ligaments can easily get overstretched or torn. MLS steps in to ease the pain and help the tissues regenerate and heal.

MLS works with your body

Most people need a series of treatments to get the full benefit of MLS. The laser therapy works with your own body’s healing processes and it takes time to gradually rebuild all of the damaged tissue.

Our patients usually feel a difference in their pain level and mobility after just 1-3 sessions. Most need a series of up to 7 MLS treatments to attain full relief and healing.
