Winter can be a very tough season on feet, even winters in the South. Even though we don’t have to deal with the snow and ice that the rest of the US trudges through, winter can still have a devastating effect on your feet and ankles. We’ve put together this list to help you be better prepared for these winter foot woes.
Athletes Foot – In winter it is common to wear boots as your main shoe gear for obvious reasons. The problem with boots is that they can trap excessive moisture, especially when combined with cotton socks, which hold moisture next to the foot. This sweat can lead to a bad case of athlete’s foot. The best way to combat this is with socks made of moisture wicking materials, like wool or polyester.
Wet / Cold Feet – Even with dropping temperature it is not common to get snow in Georgia or South Carolina. That being said it is still common for winters to be wet and cold, even in the South. Keep feet warm and dry by changing socks often, and allow shoes or boots to completely dry before wearing them again.
Heel Pain – Between all of the shopping, decorating, cooking, visiting family and friends your feet can take a beating. This increased activity, coupled with improper shoes and holiday weight gain can really add up to some serious pain. Be sure to wear supportive, good shoes as much as you can this winter to prevent the dreaded plantar fasciitis.
Ankle Sprains – With winter comes more slippery surfaces. An errant patch of ice can cause a slip and an ankle sprain. Wearing shoes with good traction and ample support can help lessen the risk, but caution is ultimately your best weapon against slips and falls.
